Perth –Western Australia (ref RMR022MH)
Purpose
The Senior Environmental Technical Advisor role reports to the Manager ESR Operations and
provides high level technical environmental support to client’s Australian and New Zealand
operations.
In addition, the role is expected to give similar support to the wider Asia Pacific region on
an occasional basis. The role is the ‘go to’ person for environmental technical issues. The role will
work closely with site operational teams and the Closure and Reclamation team on the design,
analysis and reporting of technical studies to manage potential environmental risks and maintain
company environmental compliance, Vision, Values and Standards and Stakeholder
commitments.
Dimensions
- Responsible for an operating budget of 200-700K per annum.
- Responsible for the coordination of contractors, consultants and research institutions..
- Responsible for communications with site and regional senior management.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide technical advice to operations and/or regional management to address environmental risks and emerging compliance issues.
- Develop solutions to address environmental risks and emerging compliance issues.
- Manage regular analysis of monitoring data and trends to identify potential environmental risks and emerging compliance issues.
- Provide expert advice to operations and closure sites on development of and review of technical studies as required, such as pit lake, acid rock drainage, water balance studies, groundwater investigations, contaminated sites investigations;
- Provide technical direction to operations to ensure that Environmental Performance Standards are maintained.
- Develop and manage key research projects involving targeted local, national and international institutions (government and non-government) to support risk management, permit, closure and other requirements.
- Provide technical input and peer review of projects in the Stage Gate process.
- Establish and maintain key relationships with internal and external stakeholders on technical aspects of the environmental management and monitoring.
Challenges
The major challenge of the job is to ensure a high level of technical input into environmental programs
and company risk management, and to ensure the technical aspects of client’s standards are
maintained at operations.
Working Conditions/Environment
This role will require travel to the APAC operations and closure & reclamation sites which are located
in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, New Zealand and Indonesia. Some operations
are located in remote areas and work may on occasions be expected in hot/harsh conditions.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Postgraduate technical qualifications in science or engineering with a Masters or PhD preferable.
- At least 10 years professional experience on technical matters pertinent to the mining industry, including relevant post-graduate experience.
- Experience in the fields of water management, chemistry, hydrogeology or geochemistry will be well regarded.
- Experienced in conducting multiple media environmental sampling and monitoring;
- Strong skill in data analysis and statistical analysis.
- Strong computer skills to utilize Microsoft Office software package as well as specific software related to environmental monitoring, data base and data analysis software.
- Strong oral and technical writing communication skills, including publication of scientific papers and presentation at international conferences.
- Strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills.

Purpose
To manage the closure and reclamation activities associated with client’s legacy sites and provide
related guidance to operating sites in Asia Pacific with a goal of achieving industry leading closure
outcomes that minimise liabilities and enhance organisational reputation.
Dimensions
The position is responsible for all closure and legacy sites, and guidance to operating sites on closure
aspects, within Asia Pacific. The position is responsible for managing a team of over 50 people and a
closure liability of approximately $500 million.

Key Accountabilities
- Ensure that a safety culture is embedded in the closure team.
- Assist site operations with transition to closure activities.
- Manage the process of identifying and assessing closure and reclamation work requirements on our client’s properties in Asia Pacific (APAC).
- Define concurrent reclamation activities, closure studies and required operating budgets for operating sites in consultation with the Director ESR and the Manager ESR Operations.
- Manage the planning, budgeting, scheduling, prioritisation and allocation of resources required to conduct transition to closure, closure and reclamation work at legacy, non-operating sites and discreet closure projects at operating sites (collectively termed “closure projects”), as allocated by the Director ESR.
- Manage the Closure and Reclamation department and contractors in support of closure projects.
- Manage the cost of closure projects and arrange and oversee the compilation of annual closure liability estimates.
- Seek approvals for expenditure through the AFE (stage gate) process, establishment of supply contracts and earthworks contractors.
- In consultation with the Manager ESR Operations define and budget for the social closure requirements for legacy and operating mines.
- Promote the need and quality processes associated with closure planning for operating managers and GMOs and maintain focus on the key targets of the site operations managers.
- Contribute to global standards for closure activities and develop supporting standards for the region, as applicable.
- Maintain internal relationships with operations, site and regional ESR staff.
- Establish and maintain external relationships, including relevant local stakeholders and local and state government and authorities and non-governmental interest groups. Provide assistance with critical negotiations to maintain and manage these relationships.
- Provide strategic advice, input and mentoring of staff to negotiate realistic and achievable site specific closure completion criteria with internal and external stakeholders with the aim of
achieving ultimate property relinquishment.
Challenges
The major challenges of the position are the requirement to: have a comprehensive understanding of
complex technical issues around closure; to systematically plan, schedule, resource and manage
closure activities; and develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external
stakeholders. Stakeholder management is not only one of the core elements of this work but the
stakeholders are diverse and typically have completely different and conflicting agendas.
Work spans the domains of technical knowledge and community interaction as it is not simply a
technical role but one which must understand the impacts of this technical work on the community now
and into the future in terms of economics, social and environmental impacts.
One of the key outputs that has to be accomplished is to minimize (optimize)_the closure liabilities
associated with our mining activities, while monitoring changing expectations around liability so that
the value of our operations and projects maintains its value throughout its entire life cycle. This can
result in significant savings and increases in the value of our holdings (current $500million). This role
has the largest impact in managing and reducing this liability..
Working Conditions/Environment
The position will require frequent travel through-out Asia Pacific, working within diverse regulatory and
cultural frameworks.

- Tertiary Qualification – Degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Science or a comparable qualification.
- At least 10 years of experience in environmental management of mining or related activities.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing closure projects.
- Experience or post-graduate qualifications in the fields of water management, cover designs, chemistry, hydrogeology or geochemistry will be well regarded.
- History of managing complex technical projects and developing innovative solutions to problems.
- Working knowledge of Environmental and Mining laws relevant to APAC operations.

The position will be primarily accountable for the continual improvement and implementation of the HSLP management system used in conjunction with our client’s alliance mining partner.
